Mitchell, David H.
Development of a brief measure of visual attention with controls for preattention and psychomotor processing speed.
- 201 p.
Adviser: Jeffrey Reddout.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2006.
The development and preliminary validation of the Visual Attention Screening Test - Research Edition (VAST-RE), a brief paper and pencil test of visual attention using a cancellation task protocol, is described. Unlike other cancellation tasks, this measure is designed to effectively control for the effects of preattention, as well as including a control for psychomotor processing speed. Five studies were conducted for the purposes of demonstrating the reliability, and construct, concurrent, and convergent validity of this instrument. Substantial support was demonstrated for the theoretical paradigm underlying the VAST-RE, and for two of its four subtests. Of the remaining two subtests, one demonstrated adequate correlations with comparison measures, but marginal reliability, and the other demonstrated inadequate reliability or validity to support its clinical usefulness. Recommendations for modifications to the VAST-RE subtests and directions for future research are provided.
