Thesis (M.A.)--Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, 2006.
While trait body image has been investigated in relationship to a wide range of variables in a variety of settings, state body image has received less attention. This study investigated changes in state body image depending on picture types, hypothesizing that pictures of heavy women would have a positive effect on state body satisfaction, while pictures of thin women would have a negative effect. Missing in similar studies on body image is the measurement of social comparison. The present investigation assessed social comparison, in addition to current body size and trait body dissatisfaction, in relationship to change in state body image. These variables all correlated negatively with state body satisfaction at baseline. However, task order had the most surprising effect on state body satisfaction across time. An inoculation effect occurred when seeing the heavy task before the thin task, while this was not true for the opposite task order.
