Research on stereotypes has begun to consider only recently how stereotypes are maintained through communication and has not assessed who communicates stereotypes, when and where, what is their content, how are these communicated, how individuals respond to these, and how these individuals define stereotypes. To answer these questions, the current research takes a grounded theory approach.

To answer these questions, the current research takes a grounded theory approach.
520 $a Study 1 examined written accounts of definitions of stereotypes provided by university students and corporate employees. Results revealed that both samples define stereotypes similarly to published research. Studies 2 and 3 examined first-hand written accounts of interactions in which stereotypes were communicated provided by university students. Study 3 asked participants to answer specific questions about communicated stereotypes that affected interaction. Results revealed that stereotypes were reported to be communicated in both public and private contexts by dyads and groups of people who were related to the others through intimate, work, or unfamiliar relationships. Stereotypes referenced an array of groups and traits that were verbally communicated in an explicit or implicit form. Participants' responses to these communicated stereotypes involved nine different types.
520 $a Results suggest that stereotypic knowledge is reportedly maintained when listeners participate in producing the meaning of the stereotype by responding to interpersonally communicated stereotypes with tolerance. Implications for the targets of reported stereotypic attributions are discussed.
