Childless women throughout history have been largely marginalized in their respective societies due to the overwhelming patriarchal expectations placed upon them owing simply to their female biology. With some exceptions for occupational responsibilities or religious affiliation, maternal expectations fall upon nearly all women. The female who actively chooses or simply avoids motherhood of her own volition often endures a particularly severe sanction from society for her unconventional choice. Little historical evidence of the lives of childless women survives compared with their maternal counterparts. Fortunately, what is available encompasses a great period of history, from antiquity to the present. By examining the misunderstood and often difficult lives of the childless throughout history, as seen in classic and contemporary literature written by or about women without children, this thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of their undervalued existence over centuries of oppressive paternalism.
