520 $a In this thesis, I propose to study the life and oeuvre of Leila Sebbar who remains a little-known and studied writer. This marginalization seems to have resulted from the difficulty in properly positioning the author within a clearly defined literary field. She was born in Algeria in 1941, of a Franco-Algerian marriage. This background is reflected in her works, both fictional and non-fictional, for while considering herself a French writer, she refers constantly to her Algerian roots. On the other hand, she does not fit into the French literary canon and is, therefore, relegated to a Francophone tradition and ranked by critics among Beur or Maghrebian writers. This accounts for her limited status outside of the predominant literary canons.
520 $a The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of cultural duality on the production and reception of her literary work. The intention, however, is to do so without isolating it from its biographical, social or political determinants. I will rely for my theoretical approach on the sociology of literature as elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu and Jacques Dubois.
520 $a This thesis consists of five chapters. The first one seeks to define the scope of the project by questioning such notions as the field, the habitus, the stance and the theoretical framework within which Sebbar operates. This will contribute, in the ensuing chapters, to the discussion of the manner in which the writer has developed her own strategy of emergence from within the French institutional field. The second chapter is essentially devoted to a biographical analysis of Sebbar. The third and fourth chapters, concerned respectively with the feminist experience and the discourse of the novel, seek to investigate the conducive motifs for the different sociopolitical and literary engagements of the author. The final chapter, which is devoted to the theories of reception, aims to account for the reasons behind the institutional marginalization of Sebbar.
