Ballistic protective gear can present a compromise between protecting a soldier's or police officer's (SWAT) life and risking possible harm from heat injury. Even if wearers of these protective devices are not at risk of beat injury, a comfort problem can still exist. Therefore, some type of garment that could offer these public servants a method to cool themselves or make their more comfortable is needed. Under Armour(EC) clothing purports to wick moisture away from the skin thereby cooling its wearer. Also, the MiraCool Hard Hat Pad(CP) is a device that is marketed to cool the head of helmet wearers. Also, industrial workers and athletes alike dehydrate themselves when working in hot environments. Therefore, a device that would allow these individuals to monitor their fluid loss would be beneficial. This would allow them to increase their productivity or performance. Such a device(HA) exists that is marketed (Hydra-Alert Jr EON-3067HS, Acumen Inc., Sterling, VA) to measure hydration status. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to measure physiological and comfort variables in response to wearing the EC vs. a cotton t-shirt and wearing the CP vs. wearing the helmet with no cooling garment. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of the HA. Results showed no differences between EC and cotton or CP and no CP for rectal or most skin temperatures, heart rate, plasma volume, or urine specific gravity. However, chest temperature was lower while wearing EC. Also, trends were seen in improving comfort variables while wearing the EC and CP. Additionally, helmet comfort was improved when wearing the CP. Regarding the HA, it was shown to have poor validity at most time points except for the 40 min measurement. Furthermore, the HA had poor test-retest reliability. In conclusion, the EC and CP offer little, if any, advantage in improving the physiology of its wearers. However, trends suggest that the EC and CP do offer some advantage in making its wearers more comfortable. Additionally, the results of this study suggest that the HA is not a useful tool for predicting the hydration status of its wearers.
