The novels of Anne Hebert, particularly L'Enfant charge de songes (Budren of Dreams, translated by Scheila Fishman. Anansi, 1992) are informed by a concept of passion as destructive. Girardian triangular analysis illuminates the mimetic desire and explains what Girard calls internal or external mediations as well as the double mediation and the mediation of "coquetterie," all of which operate among Hebert's characters.
