The amenity value of natural forests in the southern United States was revealed in two ways, first, at the individual level by the behavior of timberland owners and second, at the aggregate level by the behavior of regional economies. 990 Ha-1y-1 were observed in heavily stocked stands when timber prices were rapidly appreciating. Yet, the typically stand was not as productive as a less natural alternative, so an opportunity cost was paid for the natural stand. The potential profit of the natural stands in plantation silviculture was determined by applying to equivalent land the behavior observed on 457 industrially owned, artificially regenerated, even-aged loblolly pine stands in the same region. The average non-industrial private forest (NIPF) owner was willing to forgo 60% of the timber profit for the non-timber value of their more natural stands compared to a less diverse industrially managed even-aged stand. A forest naturalness index was introduced to assess the regional forest quality as an aggregate economic variable. A trend of increasing forest naturalness was found in the southern United States between 1961 and 1997. The forest naturalness also increased with higher per capita personal income, which is evidence of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. These aggregate forest and income trends imply a trade-off between forest amenities and consumption goods, which can be interpreted with economic growth theory. The amenity value for one acre of the average forested landscape ranged from 1.0 cent per person (first quartile) to 2.3 cents per person (third quartile) at 1982 prices depending on the location within the region, or a total social value ranging from
