Phillips, Kristina Kate.

- 384 p.
Adviser: Frederick M. Asher.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 2006.
In the first three decades following Indian Independence, the National Museum of India was shaped as an institution which projected an image of the nation state, a surrogate for a national identity, and evidence of the country's modern status. This dissertation looks at the failures and successes of the museum as its directors and staff attempted to define these roles under the auspices of the national government.

This work is an exploration of the museum's inception, the subsequent dynamics of its directors and their interpretations of its publics and politics, and the impact of international pressures on its meaning during this understudied period in India's museum history. It unpacks how multifarious definitions of "national" have been understood, negotiated and packaged within its galleries and within its rhetoric at this unstable time of national imagining.
