The purpose of this research is to explore the perceptions of safety culture on the part of 10 fire chiefs in volunteer fire departments who self-identify as exhibiting transformational leadership style. The research design is qualitative using an exploratory method. Data, in the form of interviews, observation, and document review were collected and analyzed. Three possible outcomes were identified for the proposed research. First, the study may reveal a relationship between leadership style and perceptions of safety culture on the part of fire chiefs. Second, through understanding this relationship, the potential exists for fire chiefs to influence safety culture, thus reducing injuries and deaths to firefighters. Third, through exploration of their leadership style, fire chiefs may find ways to expand and improve their leadership capabilities.
