Experiments were conducted to collect data on vibration transmitted from three different locations (coupling between hand and tool handle, wrist, and forearm) in a laboratory setting using operational rivet guns. The main objectives of the study were to investigate the effects of type and size of rivet gun on hand-arm vibration, to develop and test a software program for selecting rivet guns, to develop ergonomic guidelines for the selection and use of hand tools, and to evaluate rivet guns used in aircraft manufacturing industries.

520 $a Ten healthy college-going students (five male and five female) from Wichita State University volunteered to be subjects for the study. A total of twelve rivet guns (types 1, 2, 3, and 4, and three sizes, large, medium, and small from each type), three wrist postures (neutral, 1/3 max. flexion, and 1/3 max. ulnar deviation) and two applied forces (8 and 12 lbs.) were investigated.
520 $a Based on the results of analysis, ergonomic criteria, and the software developed for evaluating rivet guns, it was found that type 4 (conventional) and large size were the worst in terms of vibration produced and transmitted to the hand-arm system compared to other types (1, 2, and 3) and sizes (medium and small), respectively. These results were also supported by other objective and subjective measures. The results obtained from the experimental set-up used in the study were consistent with the results of previous studies. These results indicate that appropriate controls need to be provided for the users of conventional rivet guns, and the employees should be trained and encouraged to use the recoilless type of rivet guns instead of the conventional type.
