Scope and method of study. The objectives of this study were to identify an efficient plant tissue culture method for production of betalain from A. hypochondriachus; to determine the effect of 2,4-D concentration on callus formation and growth of A. hypochondriachus; to determine the effects of sucrose, phosphate, BAP and 2,4-D concentrations in medium on growth and betalain production of A. hypochondriachus; and to determine the effect of light wavelength on growth and betalain production of A. hypochondriachus.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Findings and conclusions. A. hypochondriachus is an excellent raw material for plant tissue culture. Callus initiation occurred at a high percentage ($\approx

0%). The concentration of 2,4-D should be maintained at 10 to 15 $\mu
$m
to prevent excessive root growth (as in media with 5.7 $\mu
$m
2,4-D) and to prevent growth retardation (as in media with 22.6 $\mu
$m
2,4-D). Requirements for higher relative growth rates include 111.11 mM sucrose, 2.5 mM phosphate, and 2.5 $\mu
$m
BAP. Requirements for favorable betalain production include 55.5 mM sucrose, 2.5 mM phosphate, and 2.5 $\mu
$m
BAP. Red monochromatic light, though not the best for growth, proved to be the best wavelength for betalain production. Stress appears to induce betalain production.
