The high cost of worker compensation claims in a competitive marketplace has caused employers to seek greater control of their disability related costs, policies and procedures. The goal of this research project was to determine "what are the most likely predictors of those who file worker compensation claims in a hospital setting". The aim was to determine whether or not there were any patterns in worker compensation claims filed in Healthcare Corporation of America (HCA) hospitals. An analysis of patterns and precedents may lay the groundwork for future research aimed at a reduction in related organizational costs, which will allow hospitals to remain competitive within the marketplace. Cost reduction of worker compensation claim expenses requires other multi-faceted interventions. Family Medical Leave Act utilization and the effects of illness and intervention in the workplace have been analyzed via a literature review. Procedures used to complete this study included an analysis of a secondary set of data records. This study employed a quantitative methodology utilizing a regression analysis approach to examine the relationship between the dependent variable of total costs of claims as compared to the independent variables of average weekly wage and length of service. Two correlation studies also examined the relationship between total costs of claims compared to average weekly wage and length of service. A separate ANOVA study examined the relationship between total costs of claims and the cause of the injury, the position held and the body part injured. The findings of this comprehensive study revealed that employee length of service significantly impacts work compensation claims costs and that improper body mechanics and falls are the greatest cause of high-cost claims in the hospital setting.
