This study examined the relationship between personality, ethnic identity, and academic achievement with 300 culturally diverse undergraduate students. Each participant was administered the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure (MEIM), the NEO Five-Factor Personality Inventory, and the Academic Motivation Scale, and a demographic questionnaire Pearson Product-moment correlation revealed that ethnic identity was positively related to academic motivation. It was also noted that amotivation was negatively correlated to ethnic identity. Results revealed that personality and academic motivation had various positive and negative correlations. The implications of this study demonstrate that motivation is based largely on the environment in which a person exists, and whether they view their environment as dependable, and have control over personal outcomes. Future lines of research in this area should address specific ethnic groups in relation to achievement motivation, attitudes toward other ethnic groups, and personality.
