This study discusses the notion of caring as scholars and teachers perceive it, that is, it addresses both the theoretical and practical components of caring. The study discusses the theories of scholars such as Gilligan, Noddings, Collins, Delpit, Rousseau, Marcuse, and others, in the context of caring and gender socialization, and how these components merge the public and private domains in order to promote students to become members of caring societies.

The study examined five elementary school teachers (two male and three female) from three different schools (two public and one independent) in Los Angeles County. Each school represented a different economic background (i.e., low, middle, high income). All teachers were identified as caring by their principals. Research included interviews with teachers, observations in their classrooms, group discussions and short questionnaires with their students.

Findings suggest that caring is essential for the promotion of learning and tolerance and for students' moral, emotional, social, and intellectual growth. The dichotomy of public and private spheres reflect the manner in which boys and girls are socialized into traditional gender roles. The more individuals feel cared for and secure and the more they are exposed to other cultures and encouraged to accept others, the more they are willing to share space and to allow others to grow as well, the more they will also respect others.

Although caring is often associated with femininity, and thus, the private domain, my argument is that bringing caring to the forefront of education, in the public domain is critical for children's socialization in both public and private spheres. This is a necessary step for students to learn to share their space with others in this world, thereby promoting tolerance and reducing violence in this world. This study also found that among the categories of caring, inclusive caring is the most critical. Inclusive caring bridges the gap between masculinity and femininity, between the public and the private spheres, between individuals and societies, or societies with other societies, nations and nations, etc. When caring is inclusive, that is, includes all others, society becomes less divisive and we can blur the lines of racism and intolerance.
