The neural dual of visual perception is a spatially distributed pattern of neuronal electrical activity. How are these disjoint neuronal activations "bound" and what is the time scale for this binding? One sensible, but controversial, theory is that the synchronous firing of action potentials, on a time scale of a few milliseconds, is the signal that determines when a population of neurons forms a representational unit. To test these ideas we evaluated the behavioral performance and neural activity of awake behaving macaque monkeys performing visual classification tasks while recording from multiple neurons and multiple local field potentials simultaneously. We found consistent relationships between spike counts in small time windows of a few tens of milliseconds, but no convincing evidence of an additional role played by the synchronous firing of action potentials between neurons, or coherence between firing patterns and background cortical field potentials.
