Malaysia is a developing country. Export has become one of the major incomes that contribute to Malaysia's economy. After the East Asian Financial crisis in 1998, to stabilize its economy, Malaysia's government pegged its currency at
$3
.8 (RM) to
$1
(USD), and there was a significant increase in the total amount of Malaysian textile and apparel exports from
$1
.3 (USD) billion in 1991 to
$2
.2 (USD) billion. In 1999, the textiles and apparel industry was ranked among the top three Malaysian export businesses. This study investigates the relationship between currency exchange rates and the imports and exports of the Malaysian textiles and apparel industry over a twelve-year period. This study incorporated descriptive and inferential statistical methods to analyze data. The data collected and analyzed show the correlations between currency exchange rate and the imports and exports of the Malaysian textiles and apparel industry. A comparison was performed on the imports and exports of the textile and apparel industry before and after the exchange rate increase in 1998. The researcher concluded that only textile imports had a significant negative correlation with the currency exchange rate in the Malaysian textile industry. The researcher believes that pegging the currency exchange rate is only good for the short term, and in the long term, will only hinder Malaysian economic development.
