The use of medicinal plants in Lao traditional medicine was examined focusing on the following three major objectives: (1) To document and collect medicinal plants used in three separate provinces; (2) To determine the influence of cultural and environmental diversity on the knowledge and frequency of occurrence of medicinal plants; (3) To biologically evaluate plants used medicinally in Laos and to isolate a bioactive chemical compound. This work was supported by and will contribute to the summation of the Lao Medicinal Plant Database (LMPD) inventoried in Laos through the effort of the International Cooperative Biodiversity Group (ICBG) based at the University of Illinois at Chicago since 1998.

520 $a Methods employed included semi-structured interviews with healers followed by the collection of commonly used medicinal plants in the provinces of Oudomxai, Bolikhamsai, and Champasak. Interviews were also undertaken with members of the general population in each province to assess the level of medicinal plant knowledge, and plot-based density measurements were performed in each province to examine differences in the frequency of medicinal plant occurrence.
520 $a A total of 160 plants were collected. Gastrointestinal problems were treated most frequently with plant remedies throughout the country. Interviews were performed with 231 individuals from the three different provinces and it was found that people living in Oudomxai province tended to have more medicinal plant knowledge. Differences were also seen in the medicinal plant densities of the three provinces, with Bolikhamsai having the lowest medicinal plant density. Chemical extraction and isolation procedures were performed on the species Gongronema napalense after it showed strong levels of antimalarial activity. A new bioactive compound, gongroneside A, was found and showed selective activity for the malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, in vitro.
