Many music education professionals have tended to perpetuate the validity of only one musical tradition---Western art music, which we ourselves were taught to regard as the only important musical tradition, even in Taiwan. Today, however, Western-trained composers, performers, and teachers are coming to realize that many sophisticated music cultures are found throughout the world, and that Western classical music is just one of many important styles.

The purpose of this study was to design a curriculum focusing on Taiwanese songs, in order to provide a model for music-educator training based on the pedagogy comprehensive musicianship. The first phase of the study was to assess the current need for new curriculum materials. Taiwanese music textbooks currently in use in elementary schools were reviewed and the curricula in undergraduate music education programs in Taiwan were examined. In addition, five Taiwanese professors and teachers from different universities and colleges in Taiwan were surveyed. Interviews affirmed the importance for children to understand Taiwanese folk songs, and the necessity to introduce and teach the Taiwanese folk songs to college students in Taiwan, especially music and music education students.

The second phase of the study was to design a new curriculum for higher music education programs in Taiwan, utilizing available materials concerning Taiwanese folk songs and based on the pedagogy of comprehensive musicianship. Through the application of this approach, the students would gain solid training as a musician via the acquisition of aural and performance skills, along with learning about music history, literature, and theory. With this unique combination of musical content and pedagogy, it is anticipated that students will be able to learn the elemental components of Taiwanese folk songs and acquire a deeper sensitivity for the artistic worth of the music.
