The results of these experiments were assessed in terms of their ability to place some constraints on the mental models approach to comprehension.

In this dissertation, the mental models approach to text comprehension was outlined, and some strong criticisms of the approach were presented. Then, the hypothesis that readers use a set of culture-specific, spatially-grounded metaphors (based on Lakoff and Johnson, 1981) to represent information in mental models was proposed. The purpose of the hypothesis is to begin to place some constraints on the mental models approach to answer the criticisms.

Four experiments were conducted to investigate the use of spatial metaphors in thinking about nonspatial domains. In the first set of experiments, subjects were instructed to place information from a text on a diagram. The results indicated that subjects prefer to place information from texts about items arranged on the more-less dimension on a diagram in a manner consistent with the metaphor MORE-IS-UP.

A second series of experiments using the symbolic distance effect paradigm was conducted to determine if presenting subjects with texts that were inconsistent with the metaphor MORE-IS-UP would affect their performance relative to subjects reading texts consistent with the metaphor. The results of these experiments were mixed, but did provide some support for the hypothesis that metaphor consistency will affect subjects' performance.

In a final experiment, subjects were asked to rate the emotional content of texts using scales that were either consistent or inconsistent with spatial metaphors. The results indicated that it takes subjects longer to use the scales when they are inconsistent with the appropriate metaphor.
