Fourteen elderly men and women (57-72 years) were studied on five consecutive nights to evaluate changes in sleep patterns and cardiovascular function. EEG, electrooculogram (EOG), and electromyogram (EMG) were recorded by standard methods. Impedance cardiography, a non-invasive approach to the study of cardiovascular function, was used to record heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output, pre-ejection period, left ventricular ejection time, and DZmax (an index of myocardial contractility).

The first night (N1) was for adaptation to the laboratory and to the recording equipment. The second and third nights (N2 and N3) were baseline nights. On the afternoon of the fourth night (N4), subjects walked on a motorized treadmill for one hour at 60% of predicted maximal aerobic capacity ((')VO(,2)max). The fifth night (N5) was a recovery night.

Analysis of EEG sleep records revealed that significantly less stage 1 (S1) occurred in the first three NREM-cycles (NREMC) after exercise (N4) compared to N2 and N5. The least wakefulness (W) was seen after exercise, but differences were not significant. SWS (slow wave sleep) and REM sleep were similar on all nights. More time in bed and sleep period time was seen on N3 compared to N2. In addition more total sleep time occurred on N3 and N4 compared to N2. NREMC2 with and without W was significantly longer than NREMC1, but the third NREMC was not different from the first or second NREMC. The most SWS was seen in NREMC1 compared to NREMC's 2 and 3, more REM and greater REM density occurred in NREMC's 2 and 3 than NREMC1, and more movement time (MT) episodes were found in REM of the third NREMC.

Heart rate (HR) was elevated for the first three hours of sleep after exercise compared to baseline and recovery nights but did not significantly decline across the night. Cardiac output (C) and stroke volume (SV) declined significantly across the night reaching the lowest levels approximately 3-5 hours after sleep onset. After exercise CO was lower than on the baseline night but SV was not different. Although CO and SV were not different between men and women, a significant night by sex interaction revealed baseline and exercise nights were different for women only and not for the men.
