The fundamental purpose of this dissertation is to better understand the dynamics of personal motivation and professional institutionalization in situations of profound paradigmatic change like the Cuban one, where the entire medical system is undergoing a shift to incorporate natural and holistic perspectives and therapies. In a qualitative style, this study focuses on the continuing education training of Cuban healthcare professionals in a modality of holistic medicine. It traces the development of natural and traditional medicine, and in particular Flower Essence Therapy, within the context of Cuba's unified national healthcare system, and defines historical events leading to its official governmental recognition and implementation. This dissertation helps illuminate how doctors trained in Western conventional medicine managed to overcome the conceptual limits of their previous education and practice, and undertake training in alternate understandings of medical problems, such as holistic medicine presents.
