This study examines the experiences of visitors with the interpretive exhibits at the Wupatki National Monument Visitor Center from an interpretive social theory perspective. Data for the study were collected from 263 mostly adult visitors on fifteen days in the fall of 2003 and the spring of 2004, using short interviews and observations. Analysis showed that visitors are diverse in their backgrounds, interests, motives, and perceptions of their experiences at the visitor center, and that authentic artifacts, social interactions, and relating to the past residents of Wupatki were the most important aspects of the different meanings they constructed from their experiences. The findings provide an understanding of visitor experiences with the interpretive exhibits and have implications for exhibit redesign and interpretation at Wupatki.
