520 $a In 1984 Salman Rushdie published "Outside the Whale," an essay which was clearly written in response to George Orwell's essay "Inside the Whale" (1940). As I see it, Rushdie's essay asks once again the question of the writer's responsibility: is the writer (simply by virtue of the fact that he or she is a writer) responsible for committing himself or herself in political terms? Or not? These are questions that also perplex Nadine Gordimer in, among other essays, one she published in 1985 entitled "The Essential Gesture: Writers and Responsibility." And in an ambivalent review of John M. Coetzee's novel, Life and Times of Michael K, Gordimer appeals to Georg Lukacs' theory of critical realism, the mode she favours for political expression. On the other hand, Coetzee, while expressing admiration for Gordimer's accomplishments in the critical realist mode, has stated in an interview (1978) that he thinks "the novel today is after a bigger game" than the critical realist type. As well, many claims have been made for the political import of Rushdie's fiction, fiction that draws on fantasy and that favours a kind of "magical realism."
520 $a This thesis does not attempt to recommend on political grounds an ideal mode for political expression. It takes up the more fruitful project of investigating how effectively a writer treats political concerns within his or her chosen mode. It examines several contemporary novels--Nadine Gordimer's The Conservationist and Burger's Daughter, J. M. Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians and Life and Times of Michael K, and Salman Rushdie's Midnight's Children--in light of some of the questions raised by the recently reopened debate on the nature of the writer's responsibility.
