Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2007.
This study uncovers the turning points in library instruction at the University of South Carolina. Through a two stage process of historiography two main questions are addressed. What were the major events in the evolution of library-user education at The University of South Carolina? What were the social, intellectual, and political influences on the evolution of library-user education at The University of South Carolina during this time period? The first process is a traditional chronological approach or the accounting of facts by date. The second was a Foucauldian archeology of library discourse at the University of South Carolina between 1801 and 1953.

This study documented a path of library discourse that can be explained in relation to the concept of gendered decision making. The established discourse was grounded in order, universal rules, objectivity and impartiality and was presided over by the men of the university. In contrast the women of the library were driven in the decision making by their relationship with students and their perceptions of their needs. Grounded in Noddings theory of the Ethic of Care this study reveals the actions and artifacts that change the direction of library instruction.
