This study explores interfaith dialogue in the context of the Parliaments of the World's Religions in 1893 and 1993. In spite of suspicion, hostility, competition and hatred, for the first time in history, religious leaders of the world's dominant religions met in peace and dialogue in Chicago in 1893. The 1993 Parliament developed as an attempt to honor the centenary of the first Parliament and progressed beyond dialogue to develop a Global Ethic.

This study explores the nature of interfaith dialogue, and the conditions necessary for its success in the 1893 and the 1993 Parliaments. It uses the records of the two Parliaments as well as interviews with leading organizers of this second Parliament. Charles Carroll Boney in the 1893 Parliament and Swami Vivekananda in the 1993 parliament saw ways around the doctrines, dogmas and other divisions that prevented people from seeing each other as spiritual beings.

Hans Kung proclaimed that "Until religions of the world find peace among themselves, there can be no peace in the world." He developed the first draft of the Global Ethic at the insistence of Daniel Gomez Ibanez and in consultation with hundreds of scholars and leaders of many faith traditions around the world.

The successes and failures of interfaith dialogue are followed during the Parliaments and in the development of the Ethic. Events of the Parliaments suggest that it is necessary to distinguish between interfaith dialogue as it is usually practiced and understood, and "philosophical interfaith dialogue." This type of dialogue requires that a participant be open to the possibility there may be a higher truth beyond the truth and wisdom of their own scriptures and traditions. Dialogue between religious adherents and participants of faith traditions that cannot be called religions is called philosophical interfaith dialogue in this study. Without a commitment to this type of dialogue, the obstacles to agreement during the Parliaments and during the development of the Ethic were too formidable for much to be accomplished.
