Dispossessions of voice: The work of description in literature and film.
Kolisnyk, Mary Helen.
Dispossessions of voice: The work of description in literature and film.
- 225 p.
Adviser: Mikhail Iampolski.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2007.
This dissertation has at its core a discussion of three literary sources (two individual texts, one corpus) in which a particular emphasis on description is combined with particular vocalic effects displayed by their characters. In the first text addressed, Hofmannsthal's "Brief an Lord Chandos," a loss of voice ensues from Chandos' experience of the collapse of metaphor into description. The second text, J.-K. Huysmans' A rebours, shows a more subtle alienation of voice--it is extracted from the main character, as it were against his will--as a consequence of his embrace of a kind of descriptive rationality. The third set of texts, from Edgar Allan Poe, all disrupt the relation of voice with body in keeping (partly, at least) with a disruption of the necessity of description for narrative. The endeavor here is to explicate how description and voicing are imbricated in each textual instance, and to use the small body of theoretical work on literary description to explain the continuities and discontinuities that they display.
