Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2008.

This study compared a group of seven female adolescent ballet dancers to four sedentary peers. The dancers were pre-professional students from the New Haven Ballet in New Haven, Connecticut and Dance Academy of Connecticut in Guilford, Connecticut. DEXA scans were performed on all subjects to determine the bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine and femoral neck sites. Questionnaires gathered information on menarchial age and menstrual regularity. No significant differences were found between the BMD values of the dancers and the controls. No significant differences were found in menarchial age or cycle regularity between the two groups. No significant relationships were found between BMD values and menarchial age or between BMD values and menstrual cycle regularity.
