Thesis (M.A.)--Tufts University, 2008.
In Senegal's capital city of Dakar, many young people from all of the nation's major ethnic groups perform in numerous local ballets that present repertoire featuring music of the jembe and sabar drums. In many cases these ballets perform on a local, national and international level, for audiences ranging from politicians at a local campaign meeting to fellow musicians at international cultural festivals. During field research in 2006 and 2007 I worked with one such ballet, Les Ballets Africains Fambondy, that has earned a reputation over the past decade for training many dancers who continue on to perform in the National Ballet of Senegal. The group, which prides itself on performing dances from all of Senegal's diverse ethnic groups, has been invited to perform at international festivals and programs throughout Africa and Europe. However, the ballets are not the only outlet for dance in Senegal. Sabar is Senegal's unique and traditional dance which is played at all life cycle events throughout the country. Currently in Dakar the contexts in which sabar is drummed and danced are evolving as a result of influences from Africa and abroad, to the extent that the city is beginning to create its own contemporary traditions. In this thesis I will analyze both the role of folkloric ballets and of sabar in contemporary Dakar, in order to examine the current definition of "traditional" and to propose a refined definition. This analysis will include discussions on gender and sexuality in sabar and the relationships between drummer and dancer within both sabar and jembe performance. Additionally, I consider the local jembe and sabar scene in Boston, in order to both confirm this new definition, as well as to analyze learning the genres in an American context.
