Man and myth: Studying the power myth and folklore has over man.
- 55 p.
Adviser: Elizabeth Tucker.
Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2007.
Modern academia would seem to place little value on the study of folk myths and legends. In fact, most often such tales are relegated to the realm of anthropological studies and folk curiosities. This approach would seem to ignore one of the most intriguing facts about these historical folk tidbits; their pervasive influence in the culture itself and how that influence is used to control and guide a population. It is the use to which these tales are put as a means of controlling a people that is the focus of study. By analyzing the origin of myths and superstitions from days past to today this study shows that myth and folklore is a very powerful influence in nearly all cultures. It is hoped that by unraveling these strands of belief and control that influence us as a people a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures can be attained.
