Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northern Arizona University, 2007.
With the growing popularity and acceptance of Internet-delivered education, web-based course delivery has become an attractive and desired option for expanding the educational opportunities available to college and university students. The Business College of this Southwestern United States public university is now offering a leadership course, MGT 311 Leadership, for the first time in a totally on-line learning environment. In adding MGT 311 to its on-line course offerings, the college is attracting students who are not geographically located on the main campus. In higher education, when distance learning initiatives, such as MGT 311, are developed, it is important to include a carefully designed evaluation of the course as part of the overall course development and implementation. Therefore, a multi-methods interpretivist case study evaluation was conducted to investigate the course for the purpose of illumination and understanding of how and why the course was developed and then experienced. The study addressed the primary concerns of six primary stakeholders of the course. These stakeholders included the Business College alumni, administrators and management faculty, prospective employers, students, and the distance learning community. The study has highlighted five major themes. These themes include Business College administrators and faculty perspectives prior to the course, student perspectives and experiences after the course, student demographics, community building, and also highlighted that the pedagogical approach of constructing leadership knowledge and experience through a social, rather than an individual process, was an important key to the course's overall effectiveness.
