Genetic relationships among indigenous groups in the prehistoric Southwest of the United States were investigated using 17 craniometric variables and general bioarchaeological techniques. The skeletal material came from sites archaeologically assigned to the Archaic, Anasazi, Central Arizona Tradition, Hohokam, Mogollon, Protohistoric/Historic Pueblo, Salado, and Sinagua culture groups. The primary focus of the study was to place prehistoric inhabitants of the Tonto Basin in central Arizona into the cultural and genetic framework of the past.

Four main statistical tests (chi-squares, t-tests, discriminant function analysis, and hierarchical cluster analysis) were run on the craniometric files. Univariate tests were run on all variables to assess the normality of their distributions. Discriminant function analyses were utilized to maximally separate the data sets and to assess genetic relatedness between groups. Hierarchical cluster analyses were used with the mean data sets for the same basic purpose.

It was concluded that the craniometric data supported the most recent archaeological data, in that prehistoric inhabitants of the Tonto Basin showed affinity in different directions depending on if they were from the Salt arm (affined more with Hohokam) or the Tonto arm (affined more with Archaic, Central Arizona Tradition, and Zuni) of the Tonto Basin.
