Thesis (Ph.D.)--Ohio University, 2002.
This study was designed to determine: (a) if preceptor programs in prelicensure nursing education had an effect on National Council Licensuring Exam for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) passing rates; (b) based on educational level, Bachelor of Science of Nursing vs Associate Degree in Nursing (BSN vs ADN), were NCLEX-RN passing rates different for those programs offering a preceptorship; and (c) to identify the different components of a preceptor program and study the effect of these different components on NCLEX-RN passing rates. The study design was quantitative, descriptive, and non-experimental.

The population for this study was the BSN and ADN prelicensure nursing education programs that are accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission in the United States. From this population, a randomly selected sample of 120 BSN and 120 ADN programs were sent a survey designed by the researcher. This survey consisted of two parts: a demographic section asking the type of program (BSN or ADN) and a descriptive section containing information regarding the use of preceptors, the components of a preceptor program, and NCLEX-RN annual pass rate for the years 1998--2000. The return rate was 66%, including 109 ADN programs and 103 BSN programs.

T-test analysis found that there was no significant difference in NCLEX-RN passing rates between nursing education programs that offer a preceptor program and those that do not offer a preceptor program. There was, however, a significant difference in NCLEX-RN passing rates for the years 1998 and 1999 when the ADN and BSN programs that offer a preceptor programs were compared by t-test.

Suggestions for further research include additional testing of the survey instrument using a similar sample, using different populations such as only ADN or only BSN programs or LPN programs. It is also recommended that another outcome measurement, such as a critical thinking inventory, be used with the survey instrument instead of NCLEX-RN passing rates.
