There has been increased interest in the use of more authentic assessments in education, in particular, performance assessments. As the use of performance assessments has increased, the validity of inferences and decisions based on these assessments has become increasingly important. Burry-Stock et al.(1996) proposed an approach for establishing the degree of agreement among raters---the Rater Agreement Index (RAI). This index can be calculated for ratings obtained for one or more subjects, using scales with two or more points, by two or more raters, and on one or more behaviors. The RAI can be applied simply and quickly to field data and in rater-training situations because it is easy to calculate.

The RAI can be applied simply and quickly to field data and in rater-training situations because it is easy to calculate.

A preliminary study found the range of the RAI is not always from 0 to I as intended. Also, the RAI value contained chance agreement. Thus, the RAI was modified (MRAI) to improve its interpretability as an index of rater agreement while retaining the features of the original RAI.

To aid in interpretability, the MRAI was compared to other indicies. The distribution of the MRAI was obtained through computer simulation. Based on this simulation study, large values of the MRAI would indicate high agreement among raters. Also, when the numbers of subjects or raters are large, the MRAI becomes a more reliable measure of rater agreement. The MRAI proves to be a very useful index of rater agreement because it can be calculated easily, and because it interprets much like a Pearson's correlation coefficient.
