The purpose of this study is to investigate the history and changes in the Korean calculus curriculum. Primary and secondary sources used in this study include the seven national curriculum plans from the Ministry of Education in Korea, Korean calculus textbooks, research journal articles, and Master's and Doctoral theses. Five research questions guided the investigation in determining how well the goals and guidelines outlined in each of the national curricula reflect the corresponding textbooks' content.

Average numbers of examples, proofs and exercise problems were computed to measure compatibility and discrepancies between national curriculum plans and Korean calculus textbooks. Exercise problems were categorized into three parts to have clear ideas on each curriculum.

Findings in this study suggest that there has been little difference in terms of calculus topics since the implementation of the second national curriculum. The number of proofs and exercise problems increased in the second national curriculum because of the addition of many calculus topics. Exercise problems also increased greatly in the sixth national curriculum because of the emphasis on problem solving. Exercise problems in the knowledge domain have been most common throughout the seven national curricula, while there has been little difference in the number of problems in the domains of interpretation and transfer across time. There are discrepancies between what is stated in the official MOE document and what is found in the content of the calculus textbooks.

This study may serve as a resource for Korean policy makers and educators in their attempt to develop a calculus curriculum in which textbook content is compatible to what is actually outlined in the official document of the Ministry of Education in Korea.
