Thesis (Ph.D.)--Wayne State University, 2007.
Variable temperatures within a landfill affect biochemical processes as well as mechanical and hydraulic response of wastes. However, heat generation and temperature distributions in municipal solid waste landfills have not been commonly investigated. This study provided a comprehensive analysis of thermal aspects of municipal solid waste landfills as a function of operational and climatic conditions using field measurements and numerical modeling. Temperature and gas distributions were investigated in different components (waste mass, liner system, and cover system) at four landfills located in Michigan, New Mexico, Alaska, and British Columbia.

The field measurements indicated that waste temperatures were affected by initial waste temperature, waste placement rate, and moisture content. The highest waste temperatures were observed at the Michigan and British Columbia sites (50 to 60°C), followed by the New Mexico site (35°C), and Alaska site (25 to 206 30°C). The bottom liner temperatures varied between 10°C (Alaska site) and 30°C (Michigan and New Mexico sites). Cover temperatures generally followed seasonal air temperature fluctuations with amplitude decrement and phase lag.

Isolated heat gain in the wastes due solely to biochemical reactions (without the effects of ambient ground thermal conditions) was represented by average temperature differential. The highest heat gain was observed at the Michigan site followed by the British Columbia, Alaska, and New Mexico sites. Heat generation rate was also determined for wastes and it was highest at the British Columbia site followed by the Michigan, New Mexico, and Alaska sites. Highest moisture content in wastes (British Columbia site) resulted in the highest heat generation rates, whereas optimum moisture content (Michigan site) existed for average temperature differential due to the high heat capacity of water. Finite element analysis was used in modeling. A generalized heat generation function was developed, which included a singular and scalable energy-expended-based function. The generalized model was scaled according to climatic conditions at each site and as a function of temperature to provide a unique 3-D dual-ramped energy-expended-based heat generation function for each site. This generalized function can be used to predict temperature distributions at any landfill as a function of climatic and operational conditions.
