This close analysis of the transatlantic correspondence of Peter Collinson, an English merchant, and of John Bartram, an American farmer, explores the origin and development of a friendship between two men who created themselves through letters. Although they never met, they forged a chain of letters which linked them in a friendship which endured for thirty-five years.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Separated by time and space, Collinson and Bartram shared their interests and lives through letters, the most popular medium of communication in the eighteenth century. Some of their letters were published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society and in the Gentleman's Magazine, enriching the eighteenth-century's repository of scientific information; still others remained private.

Despite the value of the Collinson/Bartram correspondence to science and to the transatlantic literature of the eighteenth century, it has received very little critical study. Since letters by their very nature are episodic and temporal, they generally lack unity, closure, and an elevated style; thus, in the past, they often have been consigned to the margins of literature.

This dissertation seeks to call attention to the Collinson/Bartram correspondence as an example of the vitality of correspondences within the ongoing discourse of eighteenth-century thought. Collinson and Bartram were important links in the dissemination of scientific information, in the reforestation of southern England, and in the introduction of new botanical specimens to Europe. Their lives interfaced with those of Benjamin Franklin, Lord Bute, Carl Linnaeus, Peter Kalm, Lord Petre, and Cadwallader Colden; and they participated in an extended circle of scientific correspondence, but the chronicle of their friendship remains unique because it rests solely upon the written word.
