This dissertation is a study of the dharma list of the Yogacara school of Buddhist thought. The specific list employed here is that preserved in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, written by Asanga in the late fourth century A.D. and commented on by Sthiramati, possibly as much as two centuries later, in the(, )Abhidharmasamuccayabhasya. Two goals are pursued here: to understand the meaning of the terms contained in this and similar lists, and to understand the nature of their arrangement in the list. To achieve these goals, this list is compared with similar lists contained in works of other schools, primarily the Abhidharmakosa of the Sarvastivadins and the Visuddhimagga of the Theravadins.

Various modern attempts to delimit the meaning of dharma, beginning with the work of the Geigers, are summarized, and several ancient explanations of the word are collected. It is suggested that the sense of the word in abhidharma usage developed naturally from the original meaning of duty or doctrine.

The number of dharmas contained in several lists is considered, numerical inconsistencies and provision for expansion in the lists are pointed out, and widely accepted view that the Sarvastivadins enumerated seventy-five dharmas and the Yogacarins enumerated one hundred dharmas is questioned.

The taxonomic concepts which structure the lists are examined. The lists differ among the schools, but share features and problems which have their sources in canonical literature. The canonical taxonomies classify the dharmas according to three schemes: into five skandhas, twelve ayatanas, and eighteen dhatus. Post-canonical authors, still acknowleding these categories, devised new systems--Harivarman's two basic terms, rupa, and citta; the Theravadins' four terms, rupa, citta, cetasika, and nibbana; and five terms used by Sarvastivada and Yogacara, rupa, citta, caitta, cittaviprayukta, and(, )asamskrta.

Asanga's enumeration of dharmas from the beginning of the Abhidharmasamuccaya is translated along with its commentary. Annotation includes parallel and comparable passages from other works to help determine the meaning, function, interrelationship and perhaps the history and doctrinal rationale of each dharma.
