Data hiding has assumed significance today in a variety of applications including covert communication, authentication, digital signature, and digital rights management (DRM). In this dissertation we look at data hiding from the quantization theoretic and game theoretic perspectives. In the former, we mainly look at the trade-offs between capacity, robustness, distortion and security. We also develop algorithms to achieve the trade-offs. In the second part of this work we formulate data hiding as a two person game between the embedder and the attacker. We present the proof of the fact that the worst case attack is a 3-delta function. We also provide the first closed form solution to the complete game.

The main original contributions of the dissertation are: (1) The proof of the worst case attack (3-delta function) against binary quantization based data hiding schemes. (2) The study of the embedder's and attacker's strategies using game theoretic approaches and derivation of the closed form expression for the game solutions. (3) The study of the distortion-capacity-robustness trade-off and development of pdf-matched embedding algorithms that optimize these trade-offs. (4) Hash based, secure data-hiding algorithm and security and capacity analysis. (5) The study of special attacks like the JPEG compression attack on quantizer based data hiding and optimization of the embedding strategy to counter such attacks.
