Oneida Lake in central New York is a victim of noxious blue-green algae. One common pigment in these organisms is chlorophyll a, which has unique optical properties. In this research, in situ reflectance, spectrophotometric absorption and fluorometric chlorophyll a were measured at six stations on Oneida Lake on September 29 th, 2004. Remotely sensed images, captured on September 29 th and October 1st, 2004 by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer sensor were preprocessed and input into the semi-analytical optimization reflectance model by Roesler and Perry.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Though an exact correlation was not observed between the laboratory and image-predicted chlorophyll a, their observed ranges were similar. The availability of in situ reflectance and absorption for September 29th, 2004 allowed us to correct the September image and tune the reflectance model, thus giving a more accurate chlorophyll a prediction for the September image compared to the October image. The techniques show good potential for mapping chlorophyll a for smaller lakes.
