This study investigates the relationship between home economics majors and three major variables--personality variables, career orientation, and content area major. It seeks to answer several questions about home economics students. (1) Does career orientation differ for students from the various home economics content areas? (2) Do personality variables differ for students with varying levels of career orientation? (3) Do students with different content area majors differ when described by selected personality variables?

The population for the study was women who were attending the Oxford campus of the Miami University of Ohio during the Spring, 1981 semester and who were majoring in one of the content areas of home economics and consumer sciences. A 60 percent stratified random sample was drawn from students in each of the content areas. Subjects were requested to complete a questionnaire which included demographic information, a career orientation index, and the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule. The response rate was 82.77.

Recommendations for future studies included a longitudinal study of dropouts from college and from home economics to find career orientation and personality differences, a longitudinal study of professionals in the fields for changes in the same variables, replication of the study at different types and sizes of institutions, and studies which compare these students with other student populations.
