Sixteen participants, over the age of 65 and born in Mexico, were placed into the category of Short Term Resident (STR) or Long Term Resident (LTR). The STR category included participants who migrated to the United States in older adulthood 15 years ago or less. The LTR category included participants who migrated in early adulthood 30 years ago or more.

Participants in the STR category rated life satisfaction lower than participants in the LTR category. Level of acculturation and age at migration were found to have an effect on functional independence and type of leisure activity pursued by participants, but not on family relationships and social engagement. Motivation for migration also had an effect on life satisfaction and functional independence. Some gender differences are also discussed.
