- 120 p.
Adviser: Xiao-fang Dai Rao.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northcentral University, 2007.
The dearth of knowledge of perceived best practices for facilitating innovation in non-profit organizations is the problem on which this research focused. In this qualitative, multiple-unit case study perceptions of managers at eight non-profit organizations located in the United States, New Zealand, and Europe regarding management techniques as tools for fostering innovation were explored. Data were gathered using in-depth interviews and surveys. Findings were that among strategies for innovation, (a) shared decision-making, including decentralization, was seen as more conducive to innovation than top-down decision-making, (b) encouraging risk-taking by reducing or eliminating individuals' fear of reprisal was seen as more conducive to innovation than organizational inertia and danger, (c) merging of long-term vision and short-term plans was more conducive to innovation than when either of these ingredients were lacking or out of alignment. Key findings regarding resources used by managers to encourage innovation were that innovation was associated with the use of both technology and incentive programs.
