Salen, Roxanne.
Seeking a harmonious society: How Confucianism could enhance sustainable business practices in the 21st century.
- 114 p.
Adviser: Jerry M. Calton.
Thesis (M.A.)--University of Hawai'i at Hilo, 2008.
The impact of multinational corporations (MNC) on global systems is significant and growing. This paper explores why the MNC needs to be guided by strong ethical norms and systems thinking. Western cultures can find an ethical framework within the works of Max Weber and Adam Smith to help institutionalize a new era of sustainable business practices. Similarly, China can draw on the teachings of Confucius to guide the MNC and managers in an effort to achieve social and environmental harmony and work towards becoming a responsible corporate and global citizen. This paper considers the potential of the Chinese tradition of Confucianism to expand and enrich Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practices in the twenty-first century.
