Nanoscale materials have been shown to demonstrate properties radically different from their bulk counterparts. In order to unlock the benefits of these nanoscale effects and produce a new class of conducting polymer thermoelectric materials, bismuth nanoparticles were combined with polyaniline to produce thin film nanocomposites. A method for processing polyaniline and dispersing the nanoparticles throughout the polymer matrix was developed and optimized. The electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the nanocomposite films were measured, indicating unexpected behavior in each property. This motivated a compositional study of the bismuth nanoparticles via x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results of this study and the effects on the structure of polyaniline were used to explain the unexpected behavior of the thermoelectric properties. In preparation for the study of further polyaniline nanocomposites, a process to synthesize bismuth nanowires was developed. The method was proven successful by studying the nanowires under a scanning electron microscope.
