Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of South Carolina, 2007.
The undergraduate music curriculum for music majors requires students to become proficient in both keyboard skills and music theory. Frequently, the keyboard becomes an important and integral part of the theory curriculum and is used to promote comprehension of theoretical topics. Unfortunately, the approaches and techniques used with the keyboard in the class piano and music theory classrooms may often differ to the extent that the goal of increased comprehension in the theory classroom may be unattained.

This treatise examines first the undergraduate tonal theory curriculum and then the undergraduate secondary piano curriculum via comparative study and analysis of well-known theory and piano texts. A comparison is made between piano techniques required for the performance of music theory keyboard exercises and techniques emphasized in the undergraduate piano curriculum. Finally, suggestions are made for the inclusion of piano exercises that incorporate improvisation for use in theory class; these include examples of improvisatory keyboard exercises that use the same techniques covered in class piano to create theoretically correct musical examples, while allowing for the inevitable differences in student keyboard capabilities.
