The study concluded with a survey of 27 public school music supervisors (Directors of Fine Arts, Directors of Music, and Music Chair people) in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. There were 1,746 responses completed for analysis.

The purpose of this research was to examine the opinions of music supervisors in Nassau and Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, regarding nine issues identified by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) as major issues affecting music education across the United States. Although there were other issues on the conference agenda, the issues examined in this study were the topics most talked about at the 2005 MENC national conference. The nine issues are educational reform, educational standards, assessments, funding, block scheduling, music teacher shortage, public relations, parent involvement, and preservation and development. MENC identified advocacy as a necessity as it relates to each of the nine issues as affecting music education.

A questionnaire that was partially self-developed and partially taken from "Building Support for School Music-A Practical Guide" distributed and published by MENC was used to gather information from music supervisors about the nine issues. The questionnaire consisted of questions related to each issue affecting music education.

A descriptive analysis of Long Island public school districts with music supervisory positions was used with graphs and comparative charts to analyze the effect of the nine issues facing music education as stated by MENC on their music programs and how they are maintaining and promoting their music programs during this educational climate was used from data responses gathered from returned questionnaires.

The findings supported the view that the nine MENC issues affecting music education are not major issues affecting Long Island music programs, but there is concern for the MENC issue preservation and development. The findings supported that there is a need for more advocacy efforts by Long Island music supervisors especially in Nassau County.
