Virtuoso trumpet technique and the art of transcription.
- 102 p.
Adviser: Michael Dean.
Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2007.
During the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the trumpet emerged as a major solo instrument. As much of the music written for the trumpet in the last century has pushed the trumpet far outside its traditional vocabulary, the demands on the modern-day trumpeter are vast. The wide scope of extended techniques that have been introduced into the trumpet's standard vocabulary has helped to broaden the expressive range of the trumpet. This has also placed extreme demands on the player, and due to the exceptionally high technical standards that trumpeters are held to today, the performer must attain a proficiency in multiple styles and be able to execute extreme musical passages consistently.

The violin, piano, and voice are frequently accepted as virtuosic instruments, while the trumpet is not. The full virtuosity of the trumpet was not realized until the invention of the valve and therefore did not have the virtuosic repertoire available to it like the violin, piano, and voice. After 1815, trumpet soloists began transcribing the earlier virtuosic music of many other instruments, including the violin, piano, and voice. By doing this, trumpet soloists were able to present virtuosic music that facilitated a profound emotional connection with the audience. The trumpet is capable of being played with the virtuosity of a violin, the stylistic flexibility of the piano, and the tenderness of the human voice. More and more, the technical demands required to play these transcriptions are being accepted as standard.

This dissertation functions as a treatise discussing the performance practices of virtuoso trumpet technique from the point of view of the performer. It includes information on approaching, preparing, practicing, performing, and maintaining these extreme techniques. There are detailed analyses of the modern trumpet techniques required to perform Shazam by Folke Rabe, and of the transcription techniques and practices required to play the Violin Caprice, Op.l, No. 17 by Nicolo Paganini on the trumpet. Also included are an annotated list of iconic works for the trumpet from the last sixty years and a review of modern trumpet virtuosi including short biographies.
