This study assessed the psychometric functioning of a modified version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and item response theory (IRT). Data from the national Early Head Start Research and Evaluation Study (EHSRES) were used. This particular study used the combined total sample of both Early Head Start participants and non-participants for whom PSI-SF data were available at each of three time points (when the target child was approximately 14-months, 24-months, and 36-months of age). The sample sizes were n = 2,336, n = 2,137, n = 2,085, respectively. It was determined that a four-factor model was statistically superior to a one-, two-, and three-factor model, however, no "correct" factor structure was found. A 2-factor structure was sufficiently invariant across the child's gender, program status, and mother's marital status, but not across child's age, mother's education, and ethnicity. The step structure of the instrument proved to be inadequate. The revised step structure and five items were not invariant across the age of the child. In general, the items covered a fairly broad range of the parenting stress continuum, but there was a gap in items that measure high levels of parenting stress. The implications of these results for clinical practice and research were discussed and recommendations for revising the PSI-SF were made.
