Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2007.
In recent years, there has been a steady increase in the incidence of dementia worldwide, making it a problem of epidemic proportions. Chief among the characteristics of patients experiencing dementia is the manifestation of agitated/disruptive behavior, necessitating that a variety of interventions be implemented. Music is one such intervention. This study investigated the effects of music upon such behavior, both before and after the onset of dementia. Chi-square analyses and hierarchical multiple regressions were used to test various pre- and postonset independent variables to determine their effect upon how music influences agitated/disruptive behavior in patients with dementia. Results indicated that such patients benefited most upon hearing music familiar to them; music of more rapid, rather than slower, tempos; and music that had calmed them in the past.Subjects--Topical Terms:
